Following this we continued on to the location where Ansel Adams made his image of Mount Williamson. Here is my rendition.

How did you find the spot that Adams’s stood to make his famous picture? I have not been to this part of CA but I am going to drive out there soon. Thanks!

I am told that if you drive north on Moffat Ranch Rd from the Cemetery, and park at the reservoir, the site is SW from there?

Hi , I would love to know the details to that spot. I have poked around the area a few times and got blown out by wind once and severely rained on the next time. I just want to stand in that spot one time and take it in. Oh, nice pic though!!

I spent the better part of a day trying to find this spot outside of Manzanar where Ansel Adams made his shot of Mount Williamson. Although I had two sets of gps coordinates, neither was accurate and I finally had to give up. I know that Ansel Adams drove to the spot and that he had his camera mounted on top of his vehicle, but both sets of coordinates I had required extensive overland hiking. Please let me know where this site is. I’m up for another try! Thanks.

Hi, if you happen to see this email, would love to know directions for the Ansel Adams Mt Williamson spot. Was at Manzanar in mid October but didn’t search for it. Was just in Joshua Tree and found several Adams photo locations, it was great to stand in the same spot
      Thanks

    Hi Match
    I really love this Manzanarpost.
I plan to visit Lone Pine this month and would love to visit the spot. I visited Manzanar 2 years ago in the Summer and got rained out. I couldn’t find the spot that Ansel Adam’s took this iconic photo. Can you share the directions or GPS coordinates to the Boulder field and ammo box so I can leave a token of the visit. Thank you

  • Josh Krasner January 7, 2021, 1:11 pm

Hi, I will be heading out the the Sierra’s next month – I was wondering if you would mind sharing the coordinates of the Adam’s shot (I tried unsuccessfully to locate it the last time I was there).

    Thank you,
    Josh

    • Bill Kress January 8, 2021, 10:08 pm

      Josh,
If you’re at the Cemetery monument, take the nearby dirt road NW (Boundary Road) and at the T, turn left towards the reservoir. You can park at the reservoir (we did) because the road becomes very rough and stony. Walk uphill for about a mile. You’ll see it on your left. Our card is in the Ammo box. It’s a sacred place – Please leave no trace.
It’s helpful to print out Ansel’s photo to help locate the exact spot/angle/height.
      Bill

      • Josh January 8, 2021, 11:59 pm

Thanks Bill! The last time I was there, we road on the road you’re referring to – almost got stuck. Unfortunately didn’t find the right spot so I really appreciate the directions. Now just have to hope that covid doesn’t delay or cancel the trip.

  • Dustin Morrow February 3, 2021, 12:51 pm

    Hey Bill!
I’m currently lost on an expedition to find this magical location. I parked at the memorial at Manzanar and have been solo hiking for 2 hours now. I think I am too close to the mountain. It’s a long shot…but would love if you could help me out.

  • Bob Hoffman July 29, 2021, 8:36 am

I sent a message a couple of years ago asking for directions and I don’t believe I ever received a response, as you said you would provide directions. Still interested in learning exact directions to reach this location.

    Thanks very much!

    • Bill July 29, 2021, 4:46 pm

Near Manzanar Memorial Tower take dirt road up to reservoir. Beyond there, road may not be so great. Park and keep walking about 1.5 miles straight up. The photo place is on your left. Take copy of Ansel’s photo. I think he was on his car roof.

  • William Heath September 25, 2022, 12:29 pm

    Match,
I will be visiting Manzanar on an Eastern Sierra trip in a couple of weeks. I would be interested in the coordinates or directions for Ansel Adams’ Mt Williamson photo if you are still sharing those. Thanks.
