Last night the Illuminate Workshops Meetup Group met again for the monthly night shoot. Shortly before sunset, we met in north west Denver, where we had a view overlooking downtown. The clouds in the sky would also result in a great sunset. I found this lit streetlight to include in a composition that would complement the colors of the sunset.

Streetlight And Sunset
More images from the night shoot may be found here. After the sun had set, we headed down Speer Boulevard, crossing I-25. Between the bridges, I made several attempts to capture the tail lights of cars rushing along the highway.

Interstate Tail Lights
After crossing the bridge, I found a location where I could capture the headlights of passing cars.

Interstate Traffic Light Trails
We made our way towards downtown, heading down towards the South Platte River. I stopped at the top of these stairs, setting up camera on tripod. Soon a passing pedestrian headed down the stairs, leaving behind a ghostly trail.

Ghostly Figure On Stairs
Much of the lighting in this area is yellow-orange sodium lights. The Speer bridge over the Platte River is lit by daylight colored lights. This renders the bridge white instead of the more common yellow.

Speer Bridge Steelwork At Night
We made our way along the Cherry Creek trail. Crossing the bridge, I set up with the camera aligned up river. I made several images here. For this image, I changed the focus ring from in-focus to blurred during the 3 second exposure.

Blurred Lights On Cherry Creek Trail
I like this result because there is a sharp center in the street lighting, that blurs into a star burst surrounding the light.

Whilst grilling last weekend, I noticed the patio light shining on our rose bush. What made this a striking image was the contrast of the reds and yellows of the rose against the deep blue of the twilight sky.

Rose At Twilight
While waiting for light rail at DU station, I noticed that most of the rental bikes had been returned to the rental rack. This must be near the end of biking season — the bike rack had been depleted for most of the summer at this time of the morning.

Bicycles, Human Powered
That night the snow came in — nice sticky wet snow. The ground at the station was still warm, so the snow melted. However, the snow stuck to everything above ground. I like the way the snow stuck to this bike, defining the tires and the spokes.

Snow Bicycle, DU
Walking down to work, the wet snow stuck to the trees, outlining the branches.

Snow Covered Trees
At the office the few remaining yellow leaves were lined with sticky snow.

Yellow Leaves Under Snow
During the last few days, I noticed the reflections in this fountain at Arapahoe Station. Most mornings, the sun casts harsh shadows across the fountain and the building reflected in the water. In this afternoon shot, the fountain and building were in shadow, making for a more pleasing image.

I had so much fun at the Zombie Crawl that I decided to publish lots of images. Here is the final set of images that I made from the event.

What Big Eyes You Have
Frankie’s bride was having finishing touches applied.

Frankenstein And Bride
Crossing the street, I noticed this pair of really cool socks that one girl was wearing. Note to self: I must let Shawn know about this one!

I Like Your Socks
Finally, we headed down the mall to get dinner. With the low light levels, I decided to try something different with a blur.

Yesterday was the annual Zombie Crawl in Denver. Apparently this is the largest such event nationally. I joined the Illuminate Workshops Meetup Group for this event. 16th Street was packed with people. The Umbrella Corporation was out in force too.

Yesterday was the Worldwide Photowalk for 2012. Other photos may be found here. We met at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Downtown Denver. Our leader cancelled the event due to the rain, but those who turned up decided to continue. Just as well — the rain stopped about 15 minutes after the scheduled start. Down near the Platte River is Commons Park, where we stopped for some fall colors.

Autumn Couple
After crossing the Platte River, several people were admiring dogs out for a weekend walk with their owners.

Walking The Dog
Later we made our way back over the river and along 16th Street. There was a crowd gathered around some street buskers. This included this pedicab driver who was “… working very hard…”.

Working Hard
Another taking a smoke break.

Taking A Smoke Break
The buskers were really great; two banjo players and guitarist. Someone commented that they were miners coming off shift. However, I titled this image the “Louisiana Boxcar Band”; the boxcar seemed to be a better fit for their mode of transportation.

Louisiana Boxcar Band
The guitarist also played the tambourine, bell and drum with his feet. The drum was improvised from a pedal and the plastic case that he is sitting on.
Towards the end of the walk, we met this guy, sporting an interesting attire and a white beard.

White Beard
At the end of the walk, we headed back to our meeting place. I made this image of the reflection of the heart outside the museum after the sun went down.

This week we had a cold front that brought frost, snow and rain. A walk though the garden today showed many plants had suffered from the frost. I was greeted by this cheerful yellow rose.

Yellow Rose
The cosmos flowers did not fare so well outdoors. Earlier in the week, Angela had cut some flowers and brought them indoors. After setting up the camera indoors, I examined several cosmos flowers in the vase. This pink flower had some really fine veins in the petals that I managed to capture in the following image.

Pink Cosmos, No 2
I found another pink flower and made several exposures, adjusting the focus point between each exposure. After stacking the images, we get a really deep depth of focus that shows the tips of the stamens down to petals. In this image, we can see individual pollen grains on the petals.

Pink Cosmos
In the vase were some white cosmos flowers. This image shows the limited depth of field with a macro lens. The petals are soft and out of focus, with striations radiating out from the center of the flower.

White Cosmos, No 2
I found another white cosmos flower. This one also got the focus stacking treatment with several exposures.

White Cosmos
I like the detail that is revealed in the center of the flower. I the image above, the black rods are the seeds that have just started to form.
